Beyond Nature

A 12-channel work inspired by site visits and field recordings taken by the Birrarung in Collingwood.

Excerpt from Beyond Nature, note the full work was designed for an ambisonic listening experience

Beyond Nature is a 12-channel work inspired by site visits by the Birrarung in Collingwood. Representing a single day, the work opens at dawn, with light rain, running water, and the dawn chorus. As the day continues the birds intensify as the distant drone of the freeway, rhythmic footsteps of joggers, and the sounds of cars encroach on the natural landscape, resulting in an unsettling feeling of dis-ease.

This work was constructed entirely with analog synthesizers, including the Buchla Music Easel, Moog Grandmother, and ARP2600, creating a hyperreal soundscape that interrogates the relationship between the natural and man-made world. No microphones were used, and no ‘natural’ sounds or field recordings are included.
